Sport encompasses so many options that when you’re thinking about how to increase your fitness this summer you can be spoiled for choice. Physical activity is far better for you than lounging around on the couch in front of the TV, but you probably knew that. So how can you motivate yourself to get up and go?
Firstly you need to consider the benefits of taking part in sporting activities, whether it’s with other people or on your own. Then think about what keeping fit can mean for you. As well as boosting your energy levels, even though you may be working hard at your chosen activity, sport can make you feel happier and calmer as your body increases its capacity for work. Exercise can also help with weight loss when combined with a healthy diet (cut down on fatty foods and eat more fruit and vegetables), another useful benefit.
What to wear
It will, of course, depend on the sport you’re doing, but for the most part you should be looking to dress for comfort. Clothes that are too tight won’t allow your skin to breathe properly and may prevent you from doing some of the exercises you want to. Shoes or boots should be well fitting and provide support as well as having good cushioning underneath if you’re working out on hard surfaces.
Look into reactive materials for your clothing. These include moisture wicking fabrics that react to sweat and, instead of absorbing it like normal fabrics, move it to the fabric’s surface where it evaporates. It leaves you dry and chaff-free.
If you have a physical impairment or have problems with your back when working out you don’t have to stop participating. Try using compression gear such as a new back brace to give you additional support as well as helping your muscles to recover and become relieved more quickly. You can get all sorts of compression apparel so if you’re serious about your sporting activities it’s well worth considering.
Sports to try
Workouts in the gym are a good starting point because you can gradually build up your strength at your own speed. Take advantage of advice from other users of the equipment and apart from improving your fitness there’s a good chance you’ll make new friends.
If team sports are your thing then soccer is a good way to start. You don’t need a lot of kit and as well as learning a lot of new ball skills you’ll get plenty of exercise, whether it’s a kick about in the park or playing five-a-side at your local sports facility.
Running also doesn’t need a lot of fancy kit, but if you take it up the shoes are most important to lessen the impact on your ankles and legs. Take it slowly to start with and maybe you’ll aim to do a marathon later!
Whatever you decide to do you’ll certainly be doing your body and mind a real favor by getting yourself into shape – the chances are you’ll have a very enjoyable time as well.
