Senior Health: Tips for Protecting Your Skin

As we age, so does our skin.  Also, skin becomes prone to irritation as we age, just as it did when you were a child.  As a senior, taking your skin health seriously is going to help keep you comfor­table in your own skin.  As our skin is the only organ in our body that is completely exposed to the outside world, it is our job to protect it.  With all of the pollutants, sunrays, and skin irritants in the air, there is no doubt that our skin can handle a great deal of challenges.  As you age into your senior years, your skin will start to become more easily affected by the harsh elements of your surroundings.  Below are some practical tips to help keep your skin protected from the skin aging factors in our everyday lives.

Stay Clear of Smoke.

These days, it is no secret that smoke impacts your health.  With all of the “no smoking” campaigns and the wealth of information that is now common knowledge about the health effect that smoking has on the lungs, there isn’t anyone who can deny that smoking isn’t good for the body.  It is not just the inside of the body that smoking can damage, but also the skin.  Simply being around smoke will cause your skin to age prematurely.  This will basically make you look older than you are.  Keeping out of the way of smoke will help protect your skin from aging more quickly.

Apply Sunscreen…everyday.

“Whether or not you are going to be outside during the day, put on sunscreen.  Even with the windows open in your home, those UV rays are pouring in,” said Tyler Hicks of National Salon, a beauty supplies company and a seller of skin care products. “Using a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more that includes both UVB and UVA ray protection will greatly reduce the speed at which wrinkles form.  Plus, senior skin is much more likely to develop skin cancer.  So, keeping yourself covered with a SPF 30+ moisturizer is going to help prevent the development of skin cancer.”

Humidify Your Environment.

Especially during the winter months, everyone’s skin is likely to become more dry, itchy and irritating.

“As far as senior health goes, a humidifier not only helps keep your skin from getting dry, it also helps your sinuses keep unwanted germs at bay,” said Marc Holt, spokesperson for the in home care organization, AmeriCare. “This will help keep you healthy during winter and reduce skin irritations that come with dry skin.”

Remember: Nutrition Is Key.

The food and drink that is consumed can often times be directly linked to the condition of our skin.  Since seniors are more susceptible to illnesses, body aches, and skin issues, nutrition only becomes more and more important.  Having a healthy balance of foods in your diet will help keep your skin in good condition and better enable it to repair itself.  One of the biggest contributors to healthy skin is drinking enough water each day.  This will help keep your skin naturally moisturized.

As a person ages, skin is sure to follow suit.  In order to help our skin remain healthy, comfortable, and youthful, action needs to be taken.  Protecting your skin as a senior by staying away from smoke and using a SPF lotion will help keep your skin from aging prematurely and more importantly, reduce your risk of skin cancer.  Doing simple things such as using a humidifier and drinking lots of water will also assist in keeping your skin moisturized and comfortable.  Taking senior skin health seriously will decrease your chances of having irritating skin issues throughout your golden years.
